As part of the 2016 Auckland Festival of Photography I created the short film above for the Seeing Sound multi-media exhibition at Circle Gallery in Newmarket. In the film Helena can be seen signing various phrases about silence. For example, one of the phrases is “Silence is a source of great strength.”

I deliberately chose not to include any sound or subtitles because I wanted the viewer to experience how frustrating it is when you can’t understand what someone is saying to you – something that deaf people have to deal with on a daily basis.

I’ve finally started experimenting with video. Better late than never, right?

While I was shooting a lookbook for Maggie Marilyn late last year, I also filmed the model walking back and forth in slow motion. Given my lack of expertise in this area I thought I’d better keep it simple (and I’m glad I did). I was pleasantly surprised with the end result.

The image above was my contribution to the Underground 2015 Fashion + Photography Exhibition which was held at the amazing Silo 6 space on Auckland’s waterfront during New Zealand Fashion Week. Curated by Chris Lorimer from Ciel PR, Underground showcases “work from some of the most experimental and boundary pushing fashion designers and image makers in New Zealand now.” It was an honour to be included in this year’s show.

Two Les Mills Clothing campaign videos from 2012 that feature my photography. These shoots were art directed by Matt and Ben at Mr Smith.

I’ve started experimenting with GIF (Graphic Interchange Format) image files which allow the creation of short animated sequences. It’s basically stop motion animation.

The two GIFs above, featuring Ruby Balthazar from N Model Management spinning endlessly, are just a rough test. I thought it might be handy to be able to showcase a model (and what she’s wearing) from all angles.
